YEL Attends SB64

The Sixty Fourth Session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB64) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), held in Bonn, Germany, from June 8–18, 2026, will bring together negotiators, policymakers, civil society representatives, and youth leaders under the shared objective of advancing technical negotiations and laying the groundwork for future climate decisions. As a critical mid-year checkpoint, SB64 focuses on refining the implementation mechanisms of the Paris Agreement, strengthening transparency frameworks, and addressing key issues such as adaptation, climate finance, and the global stocktake.

In this context, Young European Leadership (YEL) proudly marks its first ever engagement at an SB summit, reaffirming its commitment to amplifying youth perspectives within the technical heart of international climate diplomacy and ensuring that young voices are meaningfully integrated into ongoing negotiations.

The Importance of Youth Participation

The presence of young people at SB64 is not only important, it is essential. While often more technical in nature than the annual COP conferences, SB sessions are where much of the detailed groundwork for climate policy is negotiated. Youth participation ensures that these discussions remain forward-looking, inclusive, and grounded in the realities faced by future generations.

As climate challenges intensify across environmental, social, and economic dimensions, youth bring fresh perspectives, interdisciplinary thinking, and a strong sense of urgency. Their engagement helps bridge the gap between high-level commitments and practical implementation, reinforcing the need for ambitious and equitable climate action.

YEL continues to advocate for a youth-centered approach to climate governance, promoting intergenerational collaboration, just transition pathways, and resilient, inclusive societies.

YEL Delegates at SB64

YEL assembled a diverse and multidisciplinary delegation to represent European youth at SB64 in Bonn. Each delegate contributed expertise in climate policy, international relations, and sustainable development:

Elena Alexandra Miron (Head Delegate) – Romania
Mariama Diallo – Belgium
Liliana Włodarska – Poland

Throughout SB64, the YEL delegation will actively engage in technical negotiations, side events, and stakeholder dialogues. They will contribute policy insights, support advocacy efforts, and collaborate with international partners to advance effective and equitable climate solutions.

Looking Ahead

As the outcomes of SB64 feed into upcoming global climate milestones, including future COP negotiations, the involvement of youth delegates remains crucial. Their contributions help ensure continuity between technical discussions and political decision-making, strengthening the overall ambition of the climate process. The engagement of YEL at SB64 reflects a broader commitment to a just, sustainable, and inclusive climate future. Empowering young leaders today is key to achieving the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement and securing a livable planet for generations to come.
